Cherished symbols of identity and love.

Initial pendants and necklaces have a rich history that spans centuries. From ancient civilisations to modern times, jewellery adorned with initial motifs has been cherished as a symbol of status, identity, and affection.

A JOURNEY THROUGH TIME

The tradition of wearing initial jewellery dates back to ancient Rome. Individuals often wore signet rings engraved with their initials or family crests. These rings not only served as seals for important documents and letters but also symbolised the wearer’s social standing and authority. During my visits to the British Museum and the V&A, I marvelled at these incredible pieces, imagining the lives and stories of their owners.

Throughout history, initial jewellery continued to evolve. During the Renaissance period in Europe, intricate engravings and gemstones made initial pendants and necklaces fashionable among the nobility and wealthy elite. In the Victorian era, sentimental jewellery, including pieces featuring initials or names, gained popularity as symbols of love, friendship, and remembrance. Lockets, pendants, and rings engraved with initials or monograms became cherished keepsakes.

The 20th century saw a resurgence in the popularity of initial jewellery, particularly during the Art Deco and Mid-Century Modern periods. Initial pendants and necklaces reflected the sleek, geometric designs of the time, becoming stylish accessories for many. I particularly love Alexander Calder’s pieces I discovered at the Goldsmith’s Center Library while conducting this research.

A PERSONAL TOUCH

Today, initial pendants and necklaces continue to be beloved accessories. I fell in love with them myself and spent years playing with the idea of creating my own unique versions. I wanted my letters to be distinctive, easy to wear, and perfectly aligned with the rest of my collections. Despite numerous attempts, it wasn’t until recently, while working on a molten piece for a commission, that inspiration sparked.

I began shaping letters with silver wire, adding metal scraps for thickness and depth, and melting them in a free and intuitive way. The molten texture and playful shapes of these letters were exactly what I had been wanting to create.
